Product Information
PHYSICS LABORATORY EQUIPMENTGlass Slab for Physics Lab Experiments
A practical optics apparatus for demonstrating refraction, Snell’s law and lateral displacement of light through a transparent glass block.
Suitable for school science laboratories, college physics practicals and educational demonstrations.
Product Overview
A Glass Slab is a transparent optical block used in physics practicals to trace the path of light as it passes through glass. Students can investigate the change in direction at the boundaries and observe the lateral displacement of the emergent ray.
It supports practical learning about refraction, angle of incidence, angle of refraction and the relationship between the incident and emergent rays.
Key Learning Topics
Refraction of light Snell’s law Lateral displacement Refractive index Ray opticsSuitable for: School labs, colleges, physics departments and educational science laboratories.
Working Principle
When light travels from air into glass, its direction changes due to refraction. At the second parallel face, the ray refracts again as it returns to air. For an ideal parallel-sided slab with the same medium on both sides, the emergent ray is parallel to the incident ray but shifted sideways.
n? sin i = n? sin rSnell’s law of refraction
The slab can be used with a suitable ray box or other approved light source, paper and a protractor to trace the ray path and measure angles. The exact practical setup depends on the laboratory curriculum.
How to Perform the Glass Slab Experiment
Trace the Slab
Place the slab on paper and trace its outline. Draw an incident ray and a normal at the point where light enters.
Trace the Light Path
Use a suitable light source or the prescribed pin method to identify the incident, refracted and emergent rays.
Measure and Compare
Measure the relevant angles and lateral displacement. Repeat at different angles of incidence and record observations.
Handle the glass carefully. Inspect it for chips or cracks before use, and follow the safety instructions for the light source used in the experiment.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is a glass slab used for in a physics lab?
A glass slab is used to study refraction, trace light rays, investigate Snell’s law and observe lateral displacement.
What is lateral displacement in a glass slab?
It is the sideways shift between the original path of an incident ray and the parallel emergent ray after passing through a parallel-sided slab.
Can a glass slab be used to study refractive index?
Yes. With a suitable experimental procedure, students can measure the angles of incidence and refraction and use them to estimate refractive index.
Does the glass slab come with a ray box?
Accessories are model-dependent. Contact PSAW to confirm whether a ray box, pins, case or other items are included.
What are the dimensions of the PSAW Glass Slab?
Please confirm the exact length, width, thickness and glass grade with PSAW before ordering.
